Description
Foster carers and shared lives carers get qualifying care relief: a tax-free amount that most carers’ income never goes over. Working it out by hand means counting weeks for every placement and switching rates on each child’s 11th birthday. Foster Carer Tax Log does that for you, and gives you the figures for your tax return.
What it does
- Works out your qualifying amount: the fixed amount for your household plus a weekly amount for each placement
- Counts weeks the way HMRC does (Monday to Sunday, any part week counts) and moves to the higher rate from the week a child turns 11
- Splits the fixed amount if you care with a partner or as a joint household
- Log fostering allowances and fees, plus your expenses
- Compares the simplified method with the normal method (income minus expenses), so you can see which works out better
- Tax year summary you can print or save as a PDF, plus CSV export and backups
Private and offline
Children’s details stay on your device: use initials or a nickname, nothing is uploaded. Install it like an app on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone.

Helps you keep records and see your figures. It isn’t tax advice. Check the current rates on GOV.UK (HMRC Helpsheet 236) or speak to your fostering service or The Fostering Network.
